What Will It Mean to You?

Jen Snyder - PV Resident and Mother of School-aged Children

“In my hometown, we had a joint facility owned by the school district and city recreation department (Logan, Utah). It worked out beautifully. The school used it for gym space, locker rooms, and venues to host games at the same time members of the community were working out, taking classes and getting in shape. It was a win/win for everyone. The community recreation facility was the center of the community. The Ram Centre will be a great place for families to spend time together doing something that will benefit their health - that is not in State College but right here in the Valley. Every member of the community, no matter your age, can use the RCC. Youth Sports programs and PV Athletic programs can take advantage of the upgraded facilities and additional gym space. It's a win for everyone."

Helen Wise – Senior Citizen and Life-long Resident of Penns Valley

“Since my husband and I are well into our eighth decade and we may not be able to enjoy all of the benefits of the Ram Centre, but I will be one of the first to sign up for a safe, close place to exercise! We see the Centre as a legacy for our children and grandchildren and all of the young families now moving into Penns Valley. Our investment is for their futures.”

Amy Niewinski - PV Resident and Mother of PV Elementary Students

"We moved to Aaronsburg 10 years ago to raise our family. We have always wished for a pediatric doctor's office closer to home, instead of having to drive to Boalsburg or Bellefonte. We have three active children and it's only a matter of time before one of them falls & gets hurt and needs an x-ray for a potential broken bone. I don't want them in agony on the commute to State College or have to deal with football traffic trying to get an assessment from a physician. It also makes no sense to take a child to the hospital when they have an ear infection, strep throat or croupy cough. What families need is quicker access to medical care closer to home! It will be a godsend when we finally have a walk-in clinic right here in Penns Valley. I see the Ram Centre as a sign of progress for us all. It will be a sustainable facility that ensures our community continues to have medical services. It will be very difficult to recruit new doctors to replace our retiring physicians at the existing Penns Valley medical office. We can't take our health care in Penns Valley for granted, we have to make these progressive changes and build the Ram Centre."

Chuck Romig - Parent, Teacher, Coach and PV Resident

“The Ram Center will change Penns Valley.  We must, however, evaluate the nature of this change.  As a parent of young, school-age children I see recreational and educational opportunities.  As a son of two seniors (although not residents of the valley) I see opportunities that will improve the quality of life for our deserving seniors.  As a coach at Penns Valley High School I see facilities from which our athletes will grow and benefit.  As a resident I see an already tight-knit community, one that I have grown to love over the past fifteen years, becoming a tighter-knit community.  This is a change we should embrace and welcome.”

Kari Lucas - Penns Valley Area School District Alumus and Fitness Instructor/Coach

"Penns Valley is rapidly growing and a community center is a vital necessity.  With obesity rates and chronic diseases on the rise, exercise is one common denominator that helps in reducing these risks. For some, it could be over 30 minutes to drive to the nearest rec center. The Ram Centre would be convenient and affordable to those in our area.  We would not only be offering a facility where the community would work out, but we also would be offering a venue to provide education on the value of good nutrition and exercise habits. In addition to this, we would also be providing a positive environment for the youth of our community to socialize. I support this project 100%."

Al D’Ambrosia - former PVAHS Principal

“With the establishment of the Ram Centre behind the high school, the ability to have the community become more involved in the district schools has a great deal of potential. This can affect every age group. The participants at the senior center will have an opportunity to volunteer at the middle school/high school and the intermediate schools to share their experiences and talents. The day care center will have the opportunity to work with the students and staff involved in the child development classes at the high school. The Ram Centre will also provide more indoor practice space for the athletes at the high school helping to minimize the need for late night practices.”

A YMCA Right Inside a School Building??

A YMCA fitness center right inside a school building? Where community members, parents, staff, and students can get some exercise?

That's what Northland Pines School District in Wisconsin has done, in partnership with the YMCA of the Northwoods Eagle River Branch.

This innovative and effective project enhances education and quality of life in this rural area.

The program won a Standing Up for Rural Wisconsin Schools, Libraries, and Communities Award from State Superintendent Tony Evers.

Mike Richie, district administrator, gave these off-the-cuff, informal remarks about the project at the awards ceremony in Madison, March 7, 2011.

Medical Center, YMCA  and others
on School Property

"Lake Local School district is part of an innovative partnership between the district, Mercy Medical Center, the Stark County Library, the Chamber of Commerce, The YMCA, and the Historical Society. Working together, these organizations provide a “Center Complex” for residents for learning, healthcare and recreation. The partnership is unique in that Lake students can benefit from educational opportunities at Mercy Medical, use the YMCA for fitness and swimming programs and the Library for reading and research. "

The "Center Complex" was built in 2004.  It hosts all of the services listed above in a 150,000 square foot building that the school built with the same concept in mind as the Ram Centre: tax dollars were not used.  The only difference is that the school is the landlord of the building and used a bond to finance the project.  The complex holds the varsity gym, auditorium, and a cafeteria.  All organizations with space in the complex paid some money upfront and continue to pay a lease and utility costs.  The YMCA shares the gym space with school.  The public library has six computers available for use during the school day and sixty available when school is out.

The school superintendent said that the school is the center of the community, which is why the board moved forward with the project.

Lititz Rec Center

Lititz Rec Center

It is on borough property via a $1 lease. The Middle School is outside the back door and the two share a parking lot. The High School is across the street. The Rec Center uses the athletic fields, at first for free and now at a nominal cost. The facility has been open since 1989 with three renovations/additions the last of which included a second pool.

In Lititz, Pa the Rec Center is facing the shool property and in a U shape with the High School, Middle School, Community Rec Center, and the community pool. Director said it is wildly successful and has just recently expanded. It is not a YMCA facility.
